Why D-rings hold more
A D-ring's flat edge lets sheets stack vertically against the back cover instead of curving around a circle. That geometry adds usable capacity — the current Binders Inc. chart estimates about 500 sheets in a 2" D-ring versus about 350 in a 2" O-ring, assuming standard 20 lb bond paper. Actual capacity falls with thicker stocks, tabs, pockets and protectors.
Mounting position matters
Round rings mount on the spine; D-rings mount on the back cover. Back-cover mounting means the pages lie flat and the spine stays square on the shelf — spine printing and spine labels stay visible and straight.
Cost and availability
Round-ring metals are typically the more compact and economical option, and they are available in smaller sizes than the D-ring range.
